Got any plans for New Year's Eve?
You are invited to attend "Watch Night: A Spiritual Reset" on December 31, 2025. It's not your typical New Year's Eve party.
This two-part event will guide participants in writing a "Rule of Life," which is a personalized framework intended to help us live intentionally by aligning our actions and habits with our stated values and spiritual goals. A Rule of Life is not actually a set of rules; rather, it is a flexible guide to support your spiritual growth and remind you what truly matters. More than a night of making stereotypical resolutions, it's a time of clarifying our values, defining our vision and taking the next steps in our spiritual journey.
Each attendee will receive a copy of the book Creating a Rule of Life: A Manual for Dancing to Divine Rhythms by Jean Wise. This book will serve as a guide to writing the Rule of Life.
The event will take place on the Zoom platform, and it will involve two meetings. At 10 a.m. leaders of the event will teach participants about the Christian Rule of Life and the Wesleyan Watch Night Service. At 11 p.m. leaders will conduct a Wesleyan Watch Night worship service, which will incorporate each participant’s Rule of Life. Between the meetings, participants will have time to work on their individual Rule of Life. Both of these Zoom meetings will be recorded, and a link will be provided, so persons can attend in real time or by watching the recording afterward. Participants will have the option to mute their video cameras and microphones, if they choose, so their images and voices will not appear in the recording.
"Our purpose is to provide participants inspiration, guidance and tools to write or rewrite a rule of life and commit themselves to it in the context of meaningful worship," said Rev. Roger Short, who will lead the Zoom meetings. The event is supported by Community of the Mantle, a dispersed online ecumenical Benedictine community, alongside the Adult Discipleship and Spiritual Formation Teams of the North Alabama Conference.
The cost of the two-part event is $20 per person, or $25 for a couple who will share a book. Books will be shipped directly to the address provided at registration.
